About Polarity Therapy

Polarity Therapy was developed in the late 1940s by Dr. Randolph Stone, a chiropractor, naturopath and osteopath, who sought to discover the fundamental laws of healing. After decades of study and practice of traditional Chinese medicine and India's Ayurvedic medicine, Dr. Stone concluded that all pain and illness stems from the disturbance or blockage of energy flow in the body.

At the Polarity Center of Syracuse, we follow Dr. Stone's teachings, offering Polarity Therapy - a combination of bodywork, nutrition, exercise and self awareness - to balance the flow of energy in your body and restore you to health and wellness.

What is Polarity Therapy?

Polarity Therapy is a holistic, hands-on approach to healing designed to bring the body, mind and spirit into a state of vibrant health and harmony. Polarity Therapy is based on the theory that the free flow of energy throughout the body is the key to good health. Disruptions in the flow of energy caused by stress, injury, trauma, poor diet and other factors, lead to problems such as fatigue, pain, illness and disease. Polarity Therapy, which is often practiced in conjunction with other healing arts such as massage therapy, craniosacral therapy and aromatherapy, attends to the root causes of emotional and phsical disease, allowing us to let go of old patterns and create lasting change.

What is a Polarity Therapy session like?

Polarity Therapy is based on the individual needs of the client so no two sessions are exactly alike. A typical session lasts for one hour. During that time, the practitioner and client discuss the clients health and other concerns. Based on that discussion, the practitioner designs the rest of the session, which may include bodywork and/or suggestions regarding nutrition, exercise and lifestyle. During Polarity Therapy bodywork, the client lies fully clothed on a massage table. The practitioner uses a light, medium or firm touch with her hands on specific reflex and acupressure points. The client may feel subtle sensations, which are often experienced as tingling, warmth, expansion or wavelike movements. The practitioner also may help the client process thoughts and feelings, and develop strategies to reduce stress and improve wellness. Through this work, the client becomes increasingly empowered in the healing process.

How will I feel after a session?

The results of a session vary and may include a sense of deep relaxation, relief from specific symptoms, greater range of movement, changes in breathing, clarity and insight. Sometimes the condition a client initially seeks treatment for may not be the first thing that improves.

How many sessions will I need?

Energy healing is highly individual. The effects of Polarity Therapy are cumulative so a series of sessions may be necessary. The frequency of sessions depends upon the practitioners assessment and on the pace of the clients healing process.

What if I'm already under the care of a doctor?

Where did Polarity Therapy originate?

Polarity Therapy was developed in the late 1940s by Dr. Randolph Stone of Chicago as an integration of Eastern and Western healing techniques and principles. Specifically, Dr. Stone based Polarity Therapy on the principles of Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine, which he interpreted in conjunction with his scientific and medical knowledge as a chiropractor, osteopath and naturopath. During his 60 years of practice (he worked until age 84 and died at 91), Dr Stone studied every major natural healing art all the while experimenting with many diets, exercise programs and therapeutic methods in a constant search for the most effective ways of achieving and maintaining health.

Is Polarity Therapy regulated?

Polarity Therapy schools and educators are regulated by the American Polarity Therapy Association (APTA). A practitioner receives a certification to practice Polarity Therapy after successful completion of classroom course requirements, a knowledge-based written exam and demonstrated proficiency in clinical technique. All of our therapists are APTA-certified Polarity Practitioners. In New York state, all therapists practicing hands-on bodywork must be licensed health care providers (Registered nurse, practical nurse, massage therapist, etc.) All of our therapists hold such NYS licenses in addition to their Polarity certifications.

Is there any research on polarity therapy?

A recently published study from the University of Rochester found Polarity Therapy relieved symptoms of chemotherapy fatigue in the third week of treatment.
